Painting with what surrounds us

A group of children gathered during a Sonqo Wasi celebration

A workshop does not need a dedicated art room. We can set up in a schoolyard, a public square or another space agreed with local partners. The children arrive, meet the facilitators and gather in a welcome circle. We explain what is available, then invite them to explore it at their own pace.

Alongside paper and colours, we might use leaves to make prints, earth to create marks, chalk to draw on a suitable surface, or recycled paper for a shared collage. What we use depends on the space and on what is safe and appropriate there. We ask permission before collecting anything and leave the place as we found it.

This approach keeps the activity adaptable and avoids relying on expensive supplies. More importantly, it invites each child to notice the textures and shapes around them. One child may make a picture alone; another may work with a friend. There is no model that everyone has to copy and no competition for the best result.

After painting, movement games and dance give the group another way to participate. We finish with a closing circle where children who wish to can show their work or share what they enjoyed. We listen, tidy up together and thank our local hosts.
