Registration as a UK charity is under way

Sonqo Wasi currently exists as SONQO WASI LTD, a company registered in England and Wales with Companies House (company number 16646984). We operate on a non-profit basis: no founder or trustee receives a salary, and all activities for children are free.

We are now finalising, together with our advisers, the application to the Charity Commission to register as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). A CIO is a legal form designed specifically for charities in England and Wales.

What will this change? Once registered, Sonqo Wasi will be listed on the public register of charities, and donations from UK taxpayers will be eligible for Gift Aid. We will also publish our governing document, the names of our trustees and our annual reports.

Until the registration is complete, we prefer to be clear about where we stand: we are a non-profit company, not yet a registered charity. All documents will be published on our Transparency page as soon as they are available.
