What a Sonqo Wasi workshop looks like

Children painting during a Sonqo Wasi creative workshop

Our workshops last about two hours and are open to children aged 5 to 16. They can take place in a street, a square, a park, a forest or a school courtyard — wherever children are.

Arrival. We start with a welcome circle: names, a simple song, a game to break the ice. Children who are shy can simply watch until they feel ready to join.

Painting with what is around us. Next comes guided painting. We use paper, brushes and colours, but also leaves, stones, sand and whatever the place offers. There is no right or wrong: the aim is for every child to express something of their own.

Movement and games. After painting, we move: physical games, dance exercises and group activities that encourage children to let off steam, cooperate and trust one another. There is no competition and no one is eliminated.

Closing circle. We end together, sharing the paintings and a few words about how everyone feels.

Why mix art and dance? Because some children express themselves better with their hands, others with their bodies. Together, the two give everyone a way in. What we observe, informally, is children who open up, laugh, help each other and leave with a little more confidence.
